Anatomy of California's 2008 Forest Fire Damage
The summer of 2008 was a red-hot season in California, as a conflagration of nearly 2,700 wild fires broke out across vast tracks of California forests as early as June 6 and went on and on for quite some time. The battalion of wild fires unleashed much fire damage that California had to seek international aid from countries like Greece, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, Canada, Mexico and New Zealand to help in fire fighting.
The weather has been one of the catalysts for the fire series, because as early as three years ago, poor rainfall volume has left Cali’s woodlands severely dehydrated and therefore vulnerable to wild fire. Even before the fires broke out, impending fire damages have already been felt, leading California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to declare a statewide drought manifestation because of the record-breaking dry spells. When rarely-seen dry thunderstorms and lightning rolled into California coastlines in June, the storm ignited more than 800 fires immediately. The tinder-dry woodlands were consumed one by one as the fire spread.
Long after the lightning storms abated, forests continued to burn and fire damage escalated. Many fires broke out on a daily basis, stretching California’s resources to the limit. To make matters worse, a severe heat wave engulfed the state, a direct result of the continuing conflagrations, with temperatures soaring to 100oF and beyond. Fearing further fire damage, the National Weather Service issued high fire danger warnings across the state. Firefighters worried over the difficulties of fighting fires in such intense situations and the subsequent fire damages if they failed in their tasks.
It was an epic fire battle, with even the military helping out, a first since 1977, in ground-based fire-fighting. More than 20,000 personnel were deployed to fight the fires. A vast amount of resources were deployed to the firefighting, from ground crews, water tenders, bulldozers, and air tankers. It was a different kind of war, but a war all the same, with human fatalities and property damages. At the height of the fires, many California communities had to be evacuated for fear of being engulfed.
The quality of air in many parts of the state deteriorated rapidly as a result of the forest fires. This is evidence that fire damage can take on many forms. Thick blankets of smokes engulfed the region and reduced visibility. Record levels of air pollution became evident, and some communities have to endure inhaling particulate matters. A rise in eyes and throat infections, plus respiratory problems especially among elderly, had been noted.
An estimated 2.5 million acres of land had sustained fire damage. There were around 15 fatalities recorded, and millions in property damages. Large portions of forest and chaparral communities were destroyed, along with unaccounted woodland animal fatalities. The tourism industry reeled from the aftermath of the fires. President Bush had designated the state of California as a federal disaster area.
It would take some time for the fire damage to be completely assessed in its entirety. And even more time for the California forest ecosystem to recover.
